The game is by no means perfect in fact, I would say that every aspect of the narrative (from the dungeons to the overall story) is by far the weakest part of the gameĪlso, when playing on the Nintendo Switch, some areas with a lot going on graphically can have a slow down in frame rate (like the Hyrule Forest Area)īut those flaws pale in comparison to the quality of gameplay on display here. This game is as big a step forward for the Zelda series as the jump from 2d to 3d with its open design, seemless open world with little load screens and inclusion of rock climbing (giving the series a new degree of verticality) However, this game has more than made up for those shortcomings Unforntunately, the last few Wii titles in the series left me cold. I have been a fan of zelda games since I was a kid. One of the Best Games I've played in years You owe it to yourself to play BOTW if you're even mildly interested in these types of games! Read full review Overall this is one of the best Zelda games, and best open world games, ever produced. This doesn't detract from the game in a major way but it's the one complaint I have. Voice acted cutscenes are included for the first time I found the voices cheesy and jarring after 20 years of text-only dialogue. I was quite impressed with the NPC dialogue and facial animations, which create dive rse and entertaining characters throughout the game world. The story, characters and side quests are all excellent and will be engaging for new or seasoned Zelda fans. Almost the entire game is optional, so you can skip anything you find frustrating or come back later - no more getting stuck on weird, inscrutable dungeon puzzles! Many elements are added, changed or removed making this a very unique entry in a series I thought was getting played out.īOTW will appeal to almost any player because of the huge amount of content that can be freely played in any order. Nintendo has created the perfect mix of classic Zelda gameplay and story, and the best ideas from modern open world games. Read full reviewīreath of the Wild is a huge success as a Zelda game and as an open world game. It really is amazing if you love action adventure games, story driven games, and/or RPGs. I won't spoil anything, but you should just buy the game. Simple enough, but the characters you meet along the way and twists that happen seemingly at random drive this story above and beyond. Basically, Link wakes up from the resurrection chamber one hundred years after his failed attempt at beating Ganon. The stor y is by far one of the most compelling pieces of art in this game though. The enemies gradually get more difficult as you keep exploring, forcing you to seek out as many temples as possible to get more spirit orbs, which you can trade for more stamina or health. It's also a puzzle game, and while the starting puzzles are relatively easy, some can get very difficult if you don't know what to do. The motion controls to help aim your bow really made the game feel more real. The gameplay is amazing, and the controls- while being a little odd at first- actually turned out to be very simple. I was compelled to tell my friend how amazing it looked (even though he already knew). I first borrowed it from a friend since I had never played a zelda game before (I also had no games for my switch at the time). This talk gives a very good overview about the whole topic and you’ll learn what’s changed in Xcode 8.Collections App Services Audio & Video Developer Tools Maps & Location Photos & Camera Swift SwiftUI & UI Frameworks System Services Let’s face it: App signing is a very complicated topic, but as an iOS developer you have to deal with it. Watch this talk to learn all the details.Ĭoncurrent Programming With GCD in Swift 3 What’s New in Xcode App Signing In Swift 3, the use of GCD has become much more “swifty”. There are several ways to implement concurrent code and Grand Central Dispatch (GCD) is one of them. In order to achieve this, you have to use concurrent programming. But modern apps are also very complex, so that this can be a challenge. This is probably one of the most important guidelines in developing mobile apps. Protocol and Value Oriented Programming in UIKit Apps Concurrent Programming With GCD in Swift 3 You will discover some concepts that might be a little bit unusual at first, but these concepts can make your code much better. That talk had some kind of sequel at WWDC 2016. One of the best talks of WWDC 2015 was Building Better Apps with Value Types in Swift (you can also take a look at my last year’s post The 5 Best WWDC 2015 Talks). By watching this talk you will learn some interesting tricks and you will learn a lot about the debugger in general.ĭebugging Tips and Tricks Protocol and Value Oriented Programming UIKit Apps However, a lot of functionality is not obvious at first sight. Xcode provides you a very feature rich debugger. One of the most important tasks for a developer is debugging code. Making Apps Adaptive, Part 2 Debugging Tips and Tricks I’m sure every iOS developer will learn something by watching this talks. In this two talks you’ll get an overview about the whole layout system. But also professional developers don’t always know all the details. Now it’s become quite complex and it’s very difficult for a beginner to get an overview. Over time, more and more screen sizes has been introduced, and the layout system has also changed. Implementing the user interface for an iOS app used to be very easy at the early time of iOS development: There was just one screen size. What’s New in Swift Making Apps Adaptive, 1 & 2 It doesn’t only give you an overview about Swift becoming open source and the whole Swift evolution process, but it’s also an introduction to all the new Swift 3 features like the new API naming guidelines, changed parameter labeling and the removing of the C-style for-loop. And – last but not least – if you don’t know it already, there is good news for all developers using Swift: “Source compatibility between Swift 3 and 4 is a very strong goal.” Let’s wait and see… So of course this talk is a very important one. What’s the best thing Apple has introduced over the last years? It neither the Apple Watch or the iPad Pro, it’s Swift! Swift has improved the whole Platform and as I’ve mentioned already several times, every iOS developer should switch to Swift. Improving Existing Apps with Modern Best Practices What’s New in Swift You can learn a lot of stuff that can be applied to almost every project, so that this is in my opinion a talk that every iOS developer should watch. The four main topics are “Reduce Technical Debt”, “Asset Catalogs”, “Dependency Injection” and “Live Playgrounds”. This talk has a tone of very good ideas and tips. Improving Existing Apps with Modern Best Practices This is a list of my seven favourite WWDC 2016 talks. WWDC 2016 is over and there is still a lot to learn. Dragon Quest VIII’s fantasy world might not have the richness or detail of more recent epics like Final Fantasy XV, The Witcher III or The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, but it’s still great to explore – even if the only thing you’ll find off the path less travelled is another bunch of monsters or a barely hidden chest. However, the game’s world and its inhabitants still look bright, colourful and brimming with personality, the team’s artists doing a lot to extract maximum character from fairly scant resources.Īnd all this happens in a game where, breaking the JRPG mould, players are free to wander where they wish, either on or off the beaten track. True, the presentation isn’t quite as crisp as on the PS2, while draw distances could be longer, with objects, wandering monsters and even sizable items of scenery popping into view from time to time. In fact, on the 3DS it might have found its perfect platform – maybe even its perfect audience.įor one thing, the game’s cel-shaded cartoon visuals shine on Nintendo’s handheld. Yet time has been kind to Dragon Quest VIII. Just compare it to Final Fantasy XII, published here later in the same year. And in a genre that was keen to move forward, where complexity is often confused with depth, Dragon Quest VIII felt surprisingly retro – even over-simple. Anyone expecting the cinematic spectacle and teenage drama of Final Fantasy was bound to struggle with a game where the tone stays deliberately light and humorous and the storytelling low-key, with even the monsters often played for laughs. Where Western RPGs can rely on Tolkien-style high fantasy or the grim, gritty tropes of the modern genre giants, Dragon Quest is all a bit, well, twee. Playing it again in this new 3DS version, it’s not hard to understand why. If Dragon Quest VIII was Dragon Quest’s big shot, you could argue that it blew it. The series is still yet to really catch on over here, with the 3DS-only Dragon Quest IX a cult hit at best and Dragon Quest X unlikely to see a release in the US or Europe. Sadly, it wasn’t to be.ĭespite an excellent English localisation, fantastic voicework and some pretty revolutionary features for the genre, Dragon Quest VIII never sold in the numbers Square-Enix hoped. You may not remember how things were a decade ago, but Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King was the game Square-Enix hoped would put Dragon Quest on the Western gaming map in the way that Final Fantasy VII had done for Japan’s other blockbuster RPG series some nine years before. Red line is where you're normally at, survivability wise. Blue line is the usual amount of damage that goes out during the fight. It's more of a graphical depiction than actual data (otherwise the overlap would be much smaller). I mean, the gem is less random than a +3% dodge gem, but that's essentially equal to the amount of damage avoided with the gem. On the other hand, it won't really increase my survival much - Ra-den hasn't killed me yet in all our attempts unless half the raid was dead already or we failed to meet a dps check. If I were to use the tank legendary gem, I still wouldn't be able to drop any more mastery, because those close scrapes and near deaths could easily turn into actual deaths. The remainder of my stats can be dropped into crit for dps. For me, I took around 10k mastery as the survival point because with that amount, I feel as if I'm still in danger of dying if I play like a retard/bosses still take me down to execute range sometimes, but I don't really die. How is this complete nonsense? There is a level of survivability for each encounter that once you reach it, you are unlikely to die in the normal course of events. The notion that you consciously can "gear so that you're barely survivable with the gem is down and comfortable survivable when it's up" The notion that you consciously can "gear so that you're barely survivable with the gem is down and comfortable survivable when it's up" is complete nonsense that could only relate to real play if there were no such thing as avoidance and every boss swing always landed for exactly the same damage. There is always RNG in tanking, bosses have a range that is rolled for how much each melee swing hits for, and then there's the implications of whether you avoid something or not. The reality is that even though the absorb shield proc isn't 100% uptime, it contributes to reducing the likelihood of tank death because when it is up, the probability of a burst scenario goes down. You can make this same oversimplified argument to claim that avoidance is useless too. You either gear so that you're barely survivable with the gem is down and comfortably survivable when it's up - and die every so often when the gem isn't up - or you gear to be comfortably survivable when the gem isn't up - in which case why the heck do you want the tanking meta in the first place? This argument is complete nonsense, because it ignores the role of reducing throughput damage. A proc-based damage reduction effect is so stupid to me. I'm a big fan of mitigation, but I despise the tanking meta. Capacitive primal diamond is worth ~10% of your dps, the agile diamond is worth ~1.5-2%. You either gear so that you're barely survivable with the gem is down and comfortably survivable when it's up - and die every so often when the gem isn't up - or you gear to be comfortably survivable when the gem isn't up - in which case why the heck do you want the tanking meta in the first place?Īlso, the dps meta blows the agi/crit% one out of the water, it's not even a fair comparison. Not that it mattered since we ended up with 14 more attempts left but still. We had previously wiped at ~7% before, which means if we only had 2 more meta gems, we would've killed him like three attempts prior. The metagem all by itself did 31k dps on our kill, almost 1% of raid dps in a 25man. But it doesn't improve your crit rating so no improvement in EB stacks right? What about just sticking with the agil/crit% or the pure Crit meta which would boost DPS and mitigation? The dps meta does increase crit rating a tiny amount, but the real benefit is the proc which scales with vengeance. This is because if you apply too much pressure, you can damage the skin,” says DeRosa. “At-home removal tools are effective, but using them incorrectly might do more harm than good. Ultimately, it doesn't really matter which blackhead-removal tool you use, but rather that you're using one safely and correctly following the manufacturer's instructions.
